The Warning of Zephaniah
by Lary R. Hale
“The word of the Lord which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah. I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the Lord. I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumbling blocks with the wicked: and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the Lord. I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests; And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the Lord, and that swear by Malcham (Hos. 10:2; Amos 5:25,26); And them that are turned back from the Lord; and those that have not sought the Lord, nor enquired for him. Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord God: for the day of the Lord is at hand: for the Lord hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests (Ezek. 38:17; Rev. 19:17,18). And it shall come to pass in the day of the Lord’s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel (Mat. 22:11-13; Rev. 3:18) … And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The Lord will not do good, neither will he do evil (Prov. 18:9; Ezek. 8:12). Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof. The great day of the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the Lord: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers (Isa. 2:11). And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung. Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land” (Zeph. 1).
What a powerful and sobering passage of scripture from the prophet Zephaniah! To get a clearer picture of what is being said in parts of this chapter, be sure to read up on the reference scriptures that are placed in the text. Other than that, the only thing I want to add to this fear-worthy passage of scripture are a couple of passages from the new testament writings that say the same thing: “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them… And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Eph. 5:1-7,11). And this one also: “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear” (I Pet. 1:13-17). And so it is very easy to see that the new testament scriptures give us the same picture of what it takes to be saved from the wrath of God. And in fact what it takes is holiness, meaning pureness of heart; as the Bible plainly states (Mat. 5:8; Heb. 12:14; II Pet. 3:14). Amen.

![The Sheep and the Goatsby Lary R. Hale
“When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal” (Mat. 25:31-46). For the most part these powerful words of Jesus are self-explanatory, but there are just a couple of things that can be pointed out here that may clarify the passage even more. First of all, it is evident that both the sheep and the goats did or did not do what they were noted for, simply because it was just the way they naturally lived their lives. Neither were minded of the things that they were said by Jesus to have done or not done in their lives, again, because it was just their automatic nature of living. And that noted fact leads to the second point, which actually is the explanation of the first point. The apostle Paul I believe said it best: “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not [holy love], it profiteth me nothing” (I Cor. 13:3). The sheep at the judgment obviously received and kept the love of God thriving in their lives, and were naturally motivated thereby to do those things that Jesus praised them for. They were not calculating to do things that they figured they would be rewarded for, but rather they were doing what they loved to do because those are the things that God’s love is minded of. On the other hand, the goats either did not receive the love of God into their lives, or they DID receive it but let it “wax cold” along the way (Mat. 24:12,13; Mat. 25:8). Therefore they just naturally did the things that accompany NOT living in God’s love, and did NOT do those things that accompany having God’s love present in one’s life. And the final point that I would like to make is exactly what the apostle Paul stated in the above quoted scripture. Even if one DOES do those things that the sheep were credited for doing, and it is not motivated by the pure love of God; as Paul noted, it will do nobody any good at all. And since we are talking about the highest of all stakes here, I believe it is a very good idea to make doubly certain that our hearts retain nothing but God’s holy love, which is “shed abroad in our hearts by the holy Ghost” (Rom. 5:5). Amen.
